We are safely in Kampala after an 8 1/2 hour drive. The Bishop of the Kigezi Diocese, who has been on sick leave for a month happened to be traveling from Kampala to Kabale today as well so we kept in touch and met up with him on the road. Actually, on the road. Everyone climbed out of their vehicles and we stepped about ten feet out of traffic to meet! It was wonderful to meet him, some of us for the first time. We chatted informally for about ten minutes and then we joined hands and prayed together.
The Jopfan Hotel packed us a lunch of egg sandwiches, samosas ( a small meat and vegetable pie) and water that we ate at the Equator. Some team members finished their souvenir shopping while the others enjoyed stretching their legs.
Francis Girukwayo, our first university graduate, followed us to Kampala by bus in order to enroll in a certificate program in Administrative Law. Francis is one of our oldest orphans and a survivor of the Rwandan genocide. He plans to enroll in this one month program and we are hoping all the details can be ironed out in our last few hours in Kampala.
The team was relieved to be back at the Adonai Hotel, especially to return to Chef Francis' delicious food. His food tasted even better than at the beginning of the trip after our time in the village. We enjoyed a savory chicken, cilantro rice, fresh vegetables (green beans, zucchini, carrots), spaghetti with meat sauce, fresh pineapple, and watermelon.
This will likely be our last blog as we will be finishing a few details tomorrow and then heading for the airport around 4 p.m. (9 a.m. Michigan time). Sue and Diana plan to go with Generous to donate the "Days for Girls" kits to a local school, Karen and Joe will be meeting with a music teacher from Kyambogo University, Dave will be changing our shillings back to dollars, Dick and Dave will be preparing summary documents for the USA/Uganda Boards.
Everyone is really looking forward to seeing our families and friends! Our flight lands in Detroit around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday- we are all hoping our short layover in Amsterdam will work in our favor! See you soon! Sending love!
