September 2019 Travel Team

Dave and Karen Viele, along with Sharalyn Davis, will be heading out on September 6 returning on September 23. Karen is on the ACT Board here in Michigan and leads our MukoHOPE Team and our MUSIC Team. Dave is also a member of our ACT Board, leads ACT’s TEACH team and also handles our finances. Sharalyn is a musician, music therapist, Rotarian and seasoned traveler who will be heading to Uganda with ACT for the first time.

🎵🎶 🎵 Sharalyn and Karen will be spending many hours with Howard, ACT’s Music Director in Muko, to bring together an orchestra. The community members and children chosen for the orchestra will be those who have faithfully attended classes with Howard.

·        Orchestra members will be in a MUSIC camp Monday - Saturday (Sept. 9 - Sept. 14)

·        Current plans are for the orchestra to present concerts in the Muko area (Friday, Sept. 13) and in the local town of Kabale (Saturday, Sept. 14)

Funds are needed for transportation and meals for the musicians while in Kabale, as well as housing and food costs for the 30-40 musicians who will be involved in the week-long MUSIC camp.  Camp costs are expected to be about $300 and depending on the extent of the performances, concert costs could run as high as $2000.   If you feel this endeavor is something you would like to support, please let us know by return e-mail and send your check to:    ACT Uganda, P. O. Box 2565, Midland, MI  48641. Indicate on the check that the donation should be directed to ACT MUSIC, Travel Team Sept. 2019.

Dave will be working with the Board of Governors (similar to our Board of Education in the USA) to establish the future of Muko High School. A meeting will be held early in the trip to determine next steps.
Other planned activities include:

  • Work on our MukoHOPE Life Pathways documents, which are seven levels of counseling for the orphans;

  • Visits with all ACT sponsored orphans at our three schools;

  • Discussions on how to use musicians in the HEAL dialogues to help inform and draw in community members through a domestic violence drama;

  • Review the requirements for building a home on ACT property for Peace Corps workers. As a reminder, Will Buckner is our current Peace Corps volunteer who will be with ACT through 2020.

You can help, first and foremost, by keeping our Travel Team in your prayers.  Prayers for safe travels and productive activities.  As mentioned above, please also prayerfully consider a donation to help our hard-working and enthusiastic orchestra.

And thanks, as always, for your continued support of ACT.  Whatever your part, large or small, it takes all of us to make a difference!
