MUSIC - Muko Uganda String Instruments for Children

The MUSIC program, initiated by ACT Uganda, aspires to cultivate a community-based string orchestra in Muko Sub-County. This initiative blends Western classical music with African tribal and popular tunes, symbolizing our cross-cultural partnership.

Why Music?

Music serves as a transformative tool, offering children a means to express themselves and build confidence. The ACT String Orchestra has performed in Kabale, Uganda, working with a national music festival advisor, as well as Kisoro, Uganda. These trips marked the first time some participants traveled outside Muko Sub-County.

Our Journey

  • 2012: Launched by distributing recorders and instructional materials to 70 orphans, introducing them to music reading.

  • 2013: Expanded with six violins, music stands, and supplies to train older children and adults as string instrument leaders.

  • To Date: Over 90 string instruments and many traditional African instruments have been donated by individuals, music programs, and vendors for their use in the music classroom.

How We Achieve This

Our dedicated music teacher in Uganda, Christ Fortchie, receives violin, viola, and cello training via Zoom from Karen Viele, our music director, in Michigan. Christ conducts classes at Muko High School, Murole Preparatory School, and the Turinawe-Waechter ACT Empowerment Center.

In 2025, Christ is leading three dynamic classes, teaching violin, viola, and cello to students at:

๐ŸŽผ Muko High School โ€“ 38 students (9 advanced, 18 intermediate, 11 beginners)
๐ŸŽผ Murole Prep School โ€“ 15 students (6 intermediate, 9 beginners)
๐ŸŽผ ACT Resource Center โ€“ 14 beginner students (part of ACTโ€™s new Music Sustainability Project)

With weekly lessons and a one-week Orchestra Camp at the end of each 90-day school term, students have the opportunity to learn, grow, and create music together. Weโ€™re incredibly proud of these young musicians and grateful for the dedication of our instructors. Your support makes this possible!
