Big News! ACT Uganda Receives $47,210 Grant for Nutrition & Agriculture!
HANDS – ACT’S AGRICULTURE PROGRAM - RECEIVES A $47,210 ALLEN GRANT!
We are happy to announce that The Allen Foundation, Inc. has awarded ACT a $47,210 grant to address agriculture and nutrition issues in Muko Subcounty (Allen Foundation Website ). The Allen Foundation, named in honor of William Webster Allen, operates under the laws of the State of Michigan with offices in Midland. These Grants are directed to projects that primarily benefit programs for human nutrition in the areas of health, education, training, and research. We applied for this grant based on the following data:
The southwestern region of Uganda, where ACT operates, is 3rd highest in the country for the issue of chronic malnutrition. A significant health issue is the incidence of anemia likely due to iron deficiencies in the diet;
Since 2020, the HANDS program has been working to address these nutritional deficits by introducing iron-rich beans cultivation, and Homestead Perma-gardening (HPG) focused on crops that are rich in iron and vitamin A. Both programs have been successful and many families are benefitting from the improved nutrition these practices provide.
The future aim of this program is to continue to provide training in HPG practices and iron-rich bean cultivation. A significant new dimension will be to measure the potential impact of these programs by comparing incidence of anemia in the general population to participants in the HANDS programs. This additional objective of determining the potential impact on the incidence of anemia will help document the value of this program. It will also identify people most likely to benefit from the nutritional interventions offered.
Many thanks to The Allen Foundation!
