A Taste of Uganda: Simple & Nutritious Gnut Sauce Recipe
Gnut sauce made from locally grown groundnuts (peanuts).
One of the most beloved and nourishing dishes in Uganda is gnut sauce: a rich, creamy peanut sauce that is both comforting and packed with nutrients.
Gnut sauce is affordable, protein-rich, and made from ingredients commonly grown or sourced locally. Groundnuts (peanuts) are an important food crop in Uganda and provide protein, healthy fats, and essential nutrients that support overall health.
Gnut sauce is often served with matooke (cooked green plantains), rice, posho (made from maize flour), sweet potatoes, or cassava, making it a versatile and filling meal for families.
Ingredients
1 cup groundnuts (peanuts), roasted and finely ground
2 cups water (adjust as needed)
1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
Salt to taste
Optional additions: tomatoes, garlic, or leafy greens, depending on preferences.
Instructions
Prepare the groundnuts (peanuts)
If starting with whole nuts, roast them lightly until fragrant. Remove skins and grind into a smooth paste or fine powder.Cook the base
In a saucepan, bring water to a gentle boil. Add chopped onion if using and cook until soft.Add the groundnuts
Slowly stir in the groundnut paste, mixing continuously to prevent lumps.Simmer gently
Reduce heat and let the sauce simmer for 15–20 minutes, stirring often. Add small amounts of water if the sauce becomes too thick.Season and serve
